Wheeling Township offers most services for residents 60 and over and people with
disabilities 18 and over. Please note exceptions. For appointments call (847) 259-7730

HEALTH SERVICES
Our Registered nurse is available for free consultations as well as the following health
screenings, by APPOINTMENT.

Blood Pressure Screening and Blood Sugar Monitoring - Every Tuesday & Thursday. Blood pressure. No charge. Blood sugar. $1 charge.

Home visits for homebound seniors who do not qualify for Medicare or other private insurance coverage. Physical assessments, Blood Pressure & Diabetes Monitoring, and Medication management are provided. Call for appointment.

Hemoccult Kits available any time during Township office hours. Tests are done at home and returned to the nurse for reading. $3 charge.

Cholesterol screening for residents 18 and older - 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, 9:30am-Noon, by appointment. No fasting necessary, requires drawing of a blood sample from a finger $5.00 charge. Total Cholesterol & IIDL $10.00 charge, by appointment.

Flu Shots ...Each Fall (Oct & Nov) ages 60 & over, and high-risk patients.

MEALS ON WHEELS
Meals are provided for homebound seniors unable to prepare their own meals. Doctor’s
order is required along with home assessment visit. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday at Noon. A nominal fee is charged.

MEDICARE & SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE ASSISTANCE - S.H.I.P.
Seniors frequently have questions about their Medicare and Medicare supplemental insurance benefits. The Senior Health Insurance Counselors (S.H.I.P.) can answer questions and assist with the paperwork associated with filing claims. The Counselors have also been trained in health insurance policy comparisons. The Senior Health Insurance Program (S.H.I.P.) is designed to help answer these questions at no charge. The volunteer counselors are trained and certified by the Illinois Department of Insurance, and are available one-on-one at Wheeling Township, call 259-7730 to make an appointment.

FRIENDLY VISITORS
The Friendly Visitor Program sends trained volunteers into the homes of homebound seniors to visit, pick up light groceries, medications, or to take to doctor’s appointments. For the senior who because of age, chronic illness or disability, cannot get out, the Friendly Visitor provides the give-and-take conversation of normal life. Call 259-7730 to make arrangements for a Friendly Visitor.

RTA FARE PROGRAM: Intake site
Applications for seniors (65+) are available through the Township office. The Special Users Travel Card allows residents to travel on any RTA funded form of transportation for free.

INFORMATION & REFERRAL
Provide up-to-date information on services and activities in the northwest suburban
communities and beyond. Information includes: Social Services Agencies, home health care, nursing homes, retirement homes, legal, senior housing/centers, shared housing and much more.

SENIOR ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Senior Advisory Council monitors all of our senior services and programs. The Council provides programmatic advice, speaks the concerns of their peers, responds to Senior needs through volunteer actions, sponsors Educational Forums on timely and important topics, and serves local government as the voice of our Senior population. The Council meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 9:30AM. For additional information, call 259-7730.

DISABILITIES ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Council strives to improve the quality of life for persons who have a disability. It focuses on the areas of awareness, education, access, employment, transportation, legislative, physical and mental health. The Council sponsors a Speaker’s program, and networks with one another by sharing knowledge and expertise. Any Township resident is welcome to join the council. Meets 4th Thursday of the month - January, March, May, July and September. For additional information on dates and times, please call 259-7730.

SENIOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
Application forms and personal assistance for these programs are available in the Wheeling Township Assessor’s office. For additional Information, call 259-1515.

50+ SENIOR JOB PLACEMENT PROGRAM
The program includes a monthly Job Club, Job Bank listings, one-on-one appointments and assessments, and the annual Job Fair held in the fall of each year. Call 259-7730 for more information for ages 50 and over.

CARING CALL PROGRAM
The Caring Call Program involves the calling of clients on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. Te purpose of the call is an extension of the Friendly Visitor's visit - to provide friendship, a listening ear, compassion and understanding. In time, we hope your Caring Caller will become your "phone friend".
