Wheeling Township Highway Department Overview
Scott Saewert
Highway Commissioner
The Highway Department is responsible for public roads in the unincorporated areas of Wheeling Township. Since they are not part of any village or city, the Township is responsible for maintaining the roads, while Cook County regulates building and zoning in these areas.
For the Highway Commissioner, the most challenging and costly issue is proper street drainage. When water stays on or near roads, the pavement deteriorates at a much faster rate, thereby increasing patching and paving expenses.
On an annual basis, we examine the roads and drainage issues, and then prioritize plans for repairs based on which streets have the greatest need and/or create a public safety hazard. We work closely with the Cook County Highway Department in making decisions and planning repairs, while some projects may involve interactions and approvals from a multitude of local, county and state agencies.
Whatever project we undertake, our goal is saving dollars to do more for you. Our resources and budget are small (look at your tax bill), yet the needs are great. Therefore, we take an aggressive stance to do the most improvements at the best price in the least amount of time within our budgetary requirements.
When possible, we work with our legislators to obtain assistance in the form of grants or other funds to help finance larger-dollar projects.
Our goal is to continue a business approach to government and a commitment to direct our resources to the public safety of our roads.
It is truly my pleasure to serve you.
